Active
Term that refers to the status of a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant. An Independent Beauty Consultant is considered active in the month a minimum $225 wholesale Section 1 order is received by the Company and in the following two calendar months.
Adoptee Consultant
This consultant's Director is NOT local. So, she will attend local meetings and trainings from a Director that is in her area.
Beauty Consultant Agreement
Legal contract between the Company and the Beauty Consultant (independent contractor) which outlines the responsibilities of each.
Beauty Experience
Another term for a party or facial.
Booking
A term to describe a party, facial, class, or beauty experience that is booked and on your calendar
Business Debut
A way for a Consultant to officially announce their Mary Kay business. This is usually your very first party!
Career Car
Refers to the cars that consultants and directors can earn as a prize for meeting certain goals.
Career Chat or Interview
This is when you get together with a friend or customer and tell her all the reasons why she may be interested in becoming a consultant. You answer any questions she may have and ask if she wants to sign her agreement and become a Beauty Consultant.
Career Conference
A Company conference held each spring in which Beauty Consultants may register to attend for inspiration, motivation and education. Speakers include Independent National Sales Directors and top Independent Sales Directors.
Coaching
Establishing rapport with your hostess, explaining her role in the success of the skin care class, show or collection preview, discussing her goals for earning products from her appointment, and asking for bookings or prospective new team members. See “telephone coaching.”
Color Confident
A free educational program that teaches you about color cosmetics and application. The completion of this course adds a “badge” to your MK. Business cards and website letting customers know that you have completed the course and have the education to help them.
Commission or Love Check
Percentage paid to an Independent Beauty Consultant or Independent Sales Director by the Company on the wholesale orders of personal team members or the wholesale sales volume of her unit (if a Sales Director) based upon the products being sold at retail prices. Beauty Consultants and Sales Directors must be active to receive commissions on their personal team members’ wholesale orders.
Courts
Recognition categories for Seminar Awards Night. Achievers are recognized for recruiting and sales.
Customer Profile Card
A fill in the blank card used for every guest or customer which provides a record of a customer’s individual skin care purchases and preferences.
DIQ
Refers to an Independent Sales Director-in-Qualification. See “career path program” for details.
Direct Selling Association (DSA)
Professional organization of direct selling companies which seeks to promote high ethical standards in the direct selling industry. Mary Kay Inc. is a member of this association.

When two women together sit with you to try product.
Dovetailing
When a Beauty Consultant is unable to hold or overbooks a skin care class and asks another Beauty Consultant to fulfill her commitment to the hostess, it is called a dovetail.The original Beauty Consultant who booked the class can receive a percentage of the class sales (a suggested guideline would be 15 percent of class sales). All other sales and bookings from the class go to the Beauty Consultant who actually held the class. The hostess remains the customer of the original Beauty Consultant.

Go Give
If someone says. "You are soooo Go Give." This means you are going above and beyond by helping other women succeed. You are being selfless! Mary Kay, herself, started giving out a yearly "Go Give" award at Seminar years ago. To this day, it's the highest award given in MK.
Go Give National Area
If you do NOT have a National Sales Director your unit belongs in this group/area.
Golden Rule

Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval
An emblem presented by Good Housekeeping which represents the presence of Good Housekeeping's Consumers Policy. This policy offers a limited warranty in the form of a refund, repair or replacement if the product carrying our Seal is found to be defective within two years of purchase.
Hostess
The customer (or future customer) hosting a party and inviting her friends to join her. This is your main contact at a party.
I Story
A brief, heartfelt, enthusiastic talk on why an Independent Beauty Consultant began a Mary Kay career and what it means to her.
Inactive
An Independent Beauty Consultant who has not placed a minimum $225 wholesale order in the past 3 months.
Inventory
Your stock of product to sell that you have on hand, in person.
Layering
Layering is the process of building a trusting relationship with a customer or future consultant over time (and not expecting instant results!)
MK University
A free educational program which shares everything you need to know to get started in your business and feel confident in your products and business knowledge.
Party or Class
When 3+ women together sit with you to try product.
PCP or Preferred Customer Program
A program where the company will mail product Look Books and samples to your custom 4 times a year on your behalf. Participating in this program also gives you the added benefit of early ordering privileges when new products are released.
Pearls of Sharing
A program to earn prizes, often a beautiful pearl jewelry set, for sharing the opportunity within a 30 day period.
Perfect Start
Demonstrating products with 15 women within 14 days. When you have completed your Perfect Star, you earn your Perfect Start Pin
Personal Website
A website provided by the company for a yearly fee which allows customers to buy products from you online.
Power Start
Demonstrating products with 30 women within 30days. When you have completed your Power Start, you earn your Power Star Pin.
Pro-Pay
A credit card processing company which connects directly to your Personal Website, allowing you to collect credit card payments both online and in person.
Referrals
When a current customer shares the name of a friend who they know would be interested in your business or your products
Retail
What the customer pays for a products. For example: Wholesale cost is $6, Retail cost is $12.
Seminar

A free or low cost educational opportunity that occurs weekly, held by your Sales Director or Adoptee Sales Director

Refers to the business opportunity and the benefits that come along with a successful career as an Independent Beauty Consultant
Warm Chatter
When you meet a woman you don’t know in public and share something about your business with her
Wholesale
